President's Message - Sustaining the JLC

Commemorated on November 15, National Philanthropy Day recognizes the great contributions of philanthropy to the enrichment of our world.  It is a time to reflect on the meaning of giving and all that it has made possible. 

By definition, JLC members are philanthropists giving generously of their time, talent and financial resources.  In addition, our members SUSTAIN the Junior League of Calgary through their exemplary work and leadership with other community organizations, by recommending membership in the JLC to talented women, and by remaining loyal members. Your continuing membership provides great strength and stability to our organization.

I’d like to offer my appreciation to all our sustaining members.  We value the contributions you’ve made to establish and sustain the legacy we continue to build upon and I invite you to maintain or re-establish a connection with the JLC in a manner of your choice.

 

2011 Annual Campaign Results

The 2011 JLC Annual Campaign came to a successful conclusion at the end of February, raising over $7,000 from Active and Sustaining Members as well as special friends of the League.  A key component of our yearly revenue, funds from the Annual Campaign contribute to our community programs and operational costs. Thank you for your generosity.  

JLC Receives Donation from Mackenzie Financial

In October the Junior League of Calgary received a $500 donation from the Mackenzie Financial Charitable Foundation through their Committed Volunteer Program. This donation was thanks to JLC Active Liz Walker, an employee with Mackenzie Financial, who submitted a funding request to her employer.

Thank you to Mackenzie Financial for supporting Canadian communities through their charitable giving and to Liz for making the request on our behalf. Many employers offer similar giving programs. Check your company’s website for more information.

Junior League of Calgary Kicks Off Its Annual Campaign

With Canada's National Philanthropy Day fast approaching on November 15, the JLC is preparing to launch its 2011 - 2012 Annual Campaign.
With your help we can continue the League's wonderful programs like Moms U Matter at Highbanks Society and Treasure Trunk at Brenda's House, both of which have been highly successful.  Teen Totes continues to meet some of the needs of vulnerable young Calgarians, and Kids in the Kitchen continues to inspire children to make healthy food and lifestyle choices and raise the awareness of childhood obesity.     
Each year members are asked to help sustain the League's many activities with tax deductible donations. Alberta increased the tax credit to 21% for donations over $200 to eligible charities.  Combined with the Federal tax credit of 29%, it gives donors in Alberta a 50% tax credit – one of the highest in Canada!  And under the Alberta Community Spirit Program, charities can receive a grant based on the total eligible cash donations received from individual Albertans over a 12-month period, so your donations count twice!

JLC Receives Community Spirit Grant

For the third year in a row the Junior League of Calgary has been successful in our application to Alberta‘s Community Spirit Donation Grant Program. The League recently received a 2010 Community Spirit Grant award of $13,362!

The Province of Alberta established the Community Spirit Donation Grant Program to encourage cash donations to qualified organizations by individual Albertans. Our 2010 grant was based on individual donations from members and supporters received from June 1, 2009 to May 31, 2010. This year‘s program matched our first $10,000 in donations at 90% and the balance at 55%.

Many thanks to all who have given generously to the JLC – with this program your donations have accomplished even more. The extension of the Community Spirit Grant Program beyond its original three years (2008-2010) was recently announced and we look forward to benefiting from the program in the future!

Annual Campaign a Success!

Through the generosity of many Active and Sustaining Junior League of Calgary Members, the 2010 Annual Campaign has surpassed the $9000 mark! Your donations allow us to continue improving the lives of Calgary children and families, to train women to be capable volunteers and civic leaders and to promote voluntarism in our community.  Thank you for your support!
